Punjab Government Introduces Special Courts for Wildlife Crimes

In a groundbreaking move, the Punjab government has announced the establishment of special courts to address crimes related to wildlife protection. This initiative aims to curb illegal activities, including animal cruelty and habitat destruction, while promoting conservation efforts.

As part of the reforms, the Punjab Assembly has approved amendments to the Wildlife Act after 14 years. Offenders could face fines of up to PKR 5 million under the new regulations. Additionally, modern technologies like drones will be employed to monitor wildlife, and protected areas will receive legal safeguards.

The reforms also include the establishment of wildlife hospitals, breeding centers, and a dedicated wildlife protection force. Minister for Wildlife, Maryam Aurangzeb, stated that these changes align with international standards and will enhance tourism opportunities in the region.
